#2000 space odyssey hal movie
In addition to maintaining the Discovery One spacecraft systems during the interplanetary mission to Jupiter (or Saturn in the novel), HAL has been shown to be capable of speech synthesis, speech recognition, facial recognition, natural language processing, lip reading, art appreciation, interpreting emotional behaviours, automated reasoning, spacecraft piloting and computer chess. The Basic Edition of the HAL 9000 (Console) screensaver features 28 separate animations and runs as a re-recreation of the eight-screen HAL 9000 console from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. The activation year was 1991 in earlier screenplays and changed to 1997 in Clarke's novel written and released in conjunction with the movie. But during the journey the ship's computer, HAL 9000, develops paranoia. Another expedition is sent to Jupiter, where a second monolith has been discovered. Rules: All close ups of HALs red 'eye' are kept, regardless of dialogue. Jump forward 1000s of years, and an American expedition finds a mysterious black monolith - an obvious alien artefact - on the Moon.

In the film, HAL became operational on Januat the HAL Laboratories in Urbana, Illinois, as production number 3. Sci-fi classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey, cut down to just the HAL 9000. First appearing in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL ( H euristically programmed AL gorithmic computer) is a sentient artificial general intelligence computer that controls the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft and interacts with the ship's astronaut crew.
